Home / Featured /Podcasts-Drills / Podcast: Jim Nagle Stony Brook

This is my first podcast with this successful coach, Jim Nagle, Stony Brook. This Ward Melville High School graduate is in his fifth season as head coach of the Stony Brook men’s lacrosse team. Nagle joined the Seawolves in 2012 after 10 seasons as head coach at Colgate and is coming off of a strong season in 2014, (13-5) with a lot of young talent.

Charged with taking over a program that graduated the winningest senior class in school history, Nagle guided Stony Brook back to the NCAA Tournament with a convincing win over Albany in the America East Championship game. Despite a 7-10 record, the 2012 America East Coach of the Year led the Seawolves to their third straight regular-season conference crown.

The sixth head coach in the 29-year history of Stony Brook men’s lacrosse, Nagle was 86-64 (.573) in 10 seasons with the Colgate Raiders, winning at least 10 games in four of the last six seasons. He is the winningest coach in Raiders history and is a two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Nagle’s first head-coaching job was at Oneonta State, where he was 65-39 (.625) in seven seasons. In 1999, Nagle led the Red Dragons to a No. 11 ranking and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, earning USILA Division III Coach of the Year honors. In his seven seasons, he was named conference Coach of the Year three times, and in 1998, Oneonta State boasted the nation’s best regular season record at 12-1.
Nagle got his coaching start as an assistant coach at Springfield College from 1992-94, helping the Pride to an ECAC Championship in 1993 and an NCAA Division II Championship in 1994.

Nagle played collegiate lacrosse at Loyola College, where he was part of a Greyhounds squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times, including a spot in the 1990 title game.

I love this product!

I found Coach Nagle to be an extremely interesting interview; he is a very straightforward kind of coach, and at the same time really believes in letting his players play in practice. With two strong emphasis points, fundamentals and competition, and at the same time focused with tempo and work ethic. In the full podcast we run through a skeleton practice plan and I loved his term, “Adversity” scrimmages, scrimmaging often twice in a practice. We also spent some time on the unique twist to Ground Ball-Pass-Pass, to a re-direct to the weak side, all in 4V4 configuration.
