Coach Pilat is an awesome lacrosse coach and a great friend to our site. Pilat has won 290 games in his head coaching career, while losing just 123. Pilat is the winningest coach in program-history, winning all but 162 games in the programs’ 47-year history. His win percentage of .702 is also the best in the history of the Roanoke lacrosse program. This is his third podcast with us, and every time he provides incredible content.

Pilat became only the 13th coach in NCAA Div. III to win 200 games and is ranked fourth on the Div. III all-time wins list. He is currently fifth among active coaches in career wins and 10th in win percentage.

In 26 seasons as the RC head coach, Pilat has led the Maroons to a USILA Final Poll Top-10 ranking 18 times, culminating with a number-one ranking in 2009. They also finished with a #5 ranking in 2010, #4 ranking in 1992 and 1997 and a #3 ranking following the 2005 and 2006 seasons. He has coached 74 All-Americans, 89 First-Team All-ODAC selections, and nine ODAC Players of the Year. In 21 of his 24 seasons, the Maroons have completed the season among the nation’s top-20 in the USILA Rankings.

In 2010, Roanoke finished with a school-record 18 wins and an NCAA National Quarterfinal appearance for the 19th time in program-history. Pilat was named both ODAC and VaSID State Coach of the Year and had a program-best eight USILA All-Americans and 10 All-ODAC selections. It was his ninth conference coach of the year award.

Pilat is an integral part of Roanoke’s lacrosse excellence both as a player and a coach. As a player, Pilat was a three-time All-American, two-time ODAC Player of the Year, and the 1985 Roanoke Male Athlete of the Year. Also in 1985, Pilat received the C. Markland Kelly Award and the Hero’s Award as the nation’s top goaltender. With 710 collegiate saves, he has 29 more stops than any other keeper in school history. In addition to leading the program in career saves, Pilat has also coached six of the nine other players ranked in the top 10 all-time saves list at the school. Three of those goalies have earned All-American status.

Pilat has been very active in the lacrosse community. A former member of the Division III Advisory and All-American committees, he has served as the president of both the ODAC and Division III Coaches associations. He has been the chairman of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Century Club and was a member of the U.S. World Lacrosse Team player selection committee. His talks at the annual national lacrosse conventions have drawn interest from coaches throughout the country. Pilat is also one of the nation’s most recognizable summer camp directors, running several camps in Virginia, Florida, Connecticut, Ohio, and New York. His ‘Goalie School’ is regarded as the nation’s best camp for goalies. Pilat’s latest venture is a new goalie video aimed at improving the skills and fundamentals of both novice and advanced keepers. In five years on the market, Pilat’s video has sold over 3,000 copies.

This time around we went a slightly different direction. Although he has provided great ideas in the previous podcasts, here we focus on coaching goalies. Coach Pilat is clearly one of the top resources on goalies, and run around 700 aspiring goalies through his camps every summer.
