Head Coach Jim Berkman – Salisbury- is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA men’s lacrosse history as he begins his 28th season at the helm for 10-time national champion Salisbury University in 2016.

Berkman has compiled a 457-50 (.901) record at SU. He broke the NCAA mark for all-time coaching victories in the 2008 NCAA tournament with a win against Ohio Wesleyan University to surpass the former mark of 326 wins held by U.S. Military Academy coach Jack Emmer. Berkman’s career record entering the 2016 season is 466-55 (.894) as he spent one successful season at the State University of New York at Potsdam.

Berkman was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Oct. 26, 2013, in a ceremony at the Grand Lodge Hunt Valley, Md.

The Sea Gulls were led to their 27th-straight NCAA tournament appearance by Berkman in 2015, advancing to a quarterfinal game. The team has made it to at least the quarterfinal round in each season under Berkman. Salisbury held a 17-5 record, with an 8-0 record in the CAC, on the way to the program’s 19th conference championship.

In 2014, Berkman led the Sea Gulls to the national championship game with a 21-2 record. It was the 14th time that a Berkman-led team reached the national championship contest. The Sea Gulls captured the program’s 18th Capital Athletic Conference championship with a 12-4 win over York College of Pennsylvania on May 3.

Berkman led Salisbury to the NCAA semifinals in 2013 with a 17-6 record. The Sea Gulls reached the semifinals for the 22nd time in program history and 18th in Berkman’s watch.

Salisbury claimed its 10th national championship in 2012 with a 14-10 victory over the State University of New York at Cortland at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The Sea Gulls finished their season at 23-0 overall and 8-0 in the Capital Athletic Conference to earn a 17th conference title. With the team’s win over Cabrini College during the season, Berkman became the first NCAA men’s lacrosse coach across all divisions to win 400 games.

The maroon and gold has been in 27 consecutive NCAA tournaments since Berkman’s arrival and won national championships in 1994-95, 1999, 2003-05, 2007-08 and 2011-12. Salisbury has made 15 national championship game appearances under Berkman.

In recognition of his outstanding resume, Berkman has been recognized as the CAC Coach of the Year nine times (1996, 2002-08, 2010, 2012) and was the recipient of the Francis “Babe” Kraus award in 1991, 2008 and 2012 as the Division III National Coach of the Year.

An All-American midfielder at St. Lawrence University in 1982, Berkman came to Salisbury after serving as the assistant lacrosse coach and head basketball and junior varsity soccer coach for three seasons at his alma mater. The Watertown, N.Y., native starred on the basketball team as well as the lacrosse squad at St. Lawrence, earning MVP honors in basketball as both a junior and senior. He also was selected to play in the prestigious North-South All-Star lacrosse game in 1982. Berkman was inducted into the St. Lawrence Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.
