In his 36th season as a head collegiate coach in 2014-15, the last 31 at Hampden-Sydney, lacrosse coach Ray Rostan has established one of the most successful lacrosse programs nationally. Coach Rostan won his 300th career win on February 16, 2013. In the NCAA record books, among all active collegiate coaches within all three NCAA Divisions, he presently ranks 7th All-Time in Career Wins, and 8th All-Time overall.

In 2014, the Hampden-Sydney ODAC Finalist Tiger team, was awarded the James “Ace” Adams Sportsmanship award by the National Intercollegiate Lacrosse Officials Association for District 4, including all colleges and universities in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina.

In 2002, Rostan served as Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the U.S. National Lacrosse Team which won the World Lacrosse Championships in Perth, Australia. Rostan was the 1998 and 1989 recipient of the Francis “Babe” Kraus Memorial Award, after being voted the National Coach of the Year by his peers. He is the first Division III Coach to win the award twice. Rostan has been voted Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times.

Rostan was a member of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Committee representing Division I-II and III of NCAA Collegiate Lacrosse from 1998 through 2003. He also served as the Chair of the USILA Men’s North-South game for ten years. Coach Rostan served Hampden-Sydney as the advisor to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for ten years, from 2001 through 2011. He formerly served the USILA Committee for Coaching Ethics. In his 31 years of service to the College, Rostan has also served as the Head Coach of the Water Polo Team (Division III Final Eight in 1993), and Soccer Assistant Coach.

The Copiague (Long Island), New York native earned his B.S. in 1973 from Cortland State University and his M.S. from Ithaca College in 1977. Rostan was a member of the 1973 Cortland State National Championship team. He later played professionally in the National Lacrosse League for the 1974 National Lacrosse League Champion Rochester Griffins and for the Long Island Tomahawks in 1975.
